Palliative Care

Get the support you need—when and where you need it

Having all the information you need regarding your care options is crucial. There may be confusion about what palliative care is and how it differs from other types of care. Furthermore, others may have never heard of it and don’t know it’s a care option.

What is palliative care?

Palliative care focuses on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and their family. Care can be provided alongside other treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

This type of medical care is appropriate for people of all ages and at any stage in a serious illness. Our care team works with patients and families to identify and manage symptoms, set goals, and help make treatment decisions. Treatment may include medication, therapy, or other interventions.

Is palliative care like hospice?

Palliative medical care aims to improve the quality of life of individuals and their families, regardless of life expectancy or disease curability. The goal of both hospice and palliative medical care is to provide comfort and support to patients with serious health conditions. And while the condition cannot be cured, the symptoms can be managed, differentiating palliative from hospice. Additionally, palliative care can provide a transition between skilled home health and hospice services.

When you need extra support, our care team works with your physicians, loved ones—and you. We coordinate your care to complement your physician’s expertise. Our team works to manage your symptoms and stress while also providing support for you and your family.

Halycon Home provides palliative care wherever you call home. Palliative care is available in a variety of settings. And more and more specialized medical care is provided outside the hospital environment. Your doctor and our care team can discuss outpatient or at-home care, among other options.

Palliative care may be provided to those with various health conditions, including cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, chronic lung disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), kidney failure, chronic liver disease, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease.

And while specialized medical care has the primary purpose of treating the symptoms of a health condition, it can also help manage symptoms caused by treatments.

When you’re ready, you can start the conversation by talking with your current medical team. Your primary treating physician will be the most familiar with your response to treatment and therapy options. Importantly, you know yourself best, and your current care providers may not be aware that you’re considering additional support.
